What You're Watching:
Pet Taxi
Hop in! Pet Life TV tags along with a NYC taxi driver who caters to chauffeuring pets around town.
What You're Reading:
Going For A Ride
Taking your dog for a joy ride may cost you. Many states are introducing, and passing, bills that would ban pets from sharing the driver’s seat. Law enforcement has been cracking down on distracted drivers and ticketing motorists who are on their cell phone or texting while driving. And lap-loving dogs may be included on that list. So steer on the safe side, use a pet buckle or pet seat to strap your furry friend in place. It could save you from a ticket, and maybe even your dog’s life.
Relocating Rover
You’re ready to relocate to the big city, but is your best friend ready for the move? The following guidelines will help ensure a safe transition for both pets and their people.
Before the Move:
- Begin packing well in advance of the move so your pets become accustomed to changes in their environment.
- Invest in a sturdy crate or carrier for each pet.
- Purchase identification tags for each pet and be sure to swap tags on moving day. If your pet is micro-chipped or tattooed, call ahead to provide the database with new contact information.
- Visit your veterinarian for advice on how to reduce your pet’s travel stress.
- Look into pet-friendly hotels if you’ll be spending the night on the road.
- Pack your pet’s favorite toy or a piece of clothing with your scent on it – it may be a calming influence for your pet.
Moving Day:
- On travel day, provide them with a small amount of water instead of food.
- Make frequent stops for your dog to eliminate and stretch all fours. If traveling with a feline, the carrier should be large enough to accommodate a litter pan.
- When you arrive at your new home, secure pets in a quiet room, away from the main traffic area.
Settling In:
- Cats: For the first few days, kitties will benefit from being confined to a single room. After a few days, introduce cats to one room at a time, always reminding them where the litter box is located.
- Dogs: Introduce dogs to a new home when furniture is in place. Familiarize them with one room before introducing to another. This can take a few days, but will ease nerves and prevent an escape.
- When outdoors, keep them on a leash.
- All pets: As soon as possible, choose a new veterinarian. Talk to neighbors or contact the local veterinary association for help.

Did You Know:

During long road trips, your dog needs to get out of the car to stretch all fours every two hours. You can find many pet friendly places to stop, even in major cities. New York City, for example, has more than 30 off-leash dog parks that are open to the public.
