Make your pet a partner in health

We’ve all heard the statistics that over half the American population is overweight, but did you now that the same statistics apply to pets as well? Both people and pets are in a fight to get fit so what better way to achieve a healthy lifestyle than to pair up with your pet.

“Pets embody several qualities that make them ideal exercise buddies, such as consistency of routine, scheduling flexibility and compatible fitness level,” says Dan Christian, DVM and executive director of the Purina Pet Institute. “The benefits of a pet workout partner extend beyond mere exercise to encompass overall wellness. Even better, teaming up with your pet not only helps you, it also helps your canine and feline companions attain a healthier lifestyle.”

The Purina Pet Institute has developed an online program designed for just this purpose. The program focuses on a holistic approach and a combination of diet, exercise and environment and gives detailed explanations on tips and activities to help you and your pet get fit. Best of all, the program offers participants the option of tracking their progress through charts.

The plan has three areas divided as follows: Wellness Basics, Getting Fit, and Healthy Together. Each level is has three categories that offer a selection of wellness tips or activities. You need only choose two from the human and pet categories to begin. Each level is designed to be completed in a month.

The first category, Wellness Basics, is designed to get you and your pet started through assessment, diet and dental care. Getting Fit, the second Healthy Steps category, stresses skin and coat maintenance, stretching everyday, and physical activity. The final category titled, Healthy Together, focuses on stimulating the human and pet brain through training exercises, enhancing your environment and bonding with one another.

Pet Allergies Now in Bloom

Springtime blooms seasonal allergies for many. But if you are one of the 42- million Americans that suffer from pet allergies, your symptoms may be blooming all year long.

Dogs and cats are the most popular pets, and the most typical animals that people are allergic to. Approximately twenty percent of the population has a predisposition to develop allergies, randomly.

Millions of pet-allergic animal lovers live healthy, productive lives by learning how to minimize the allergy producing causes in their home environment.

People suffering with pet allergy symptoms can feel like they have 40-percent of a cold all the time.

The responses, or symptoms can include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, sinus infections, eczema, hives, watery eyes and even bronchial asthma.

Since pet dander accumulates most where the animal lies down to sleep, sharing sleeping quarters with a pet may be the worst thing an allergic pet owner can do.

“Pet owners can at least create an allergy-free haven in the bedroom, which is where we spend most of our life,” explains Dr Garcia-Ibenez an allergist in Tampa, Florida. “Also install free-standing HEPA filters in the bedroom to reduce airborne allergens.”

Frequent bathing of the pet can reduce dander, but is generally short lived.
Also, wash your pet’s bedding or clean their favorite nap spots frequently to reduce dander accumulation.
